Apparently Midas was raised to think short hair was for women and long hair was for men due to religious reasons. I want to make a Mennonite joke but I'm not sure what Christian group is known for this.

It sounds like the women's hair was short for practical reasons (to prevent babies from grabbing it), and the men's hair seemed to be based on Nazarites (like Samson). Could be a Jewish group, or some small local splinter group of Christians.
