Define "social media." Is Reddit "social media?" Is this forum "social media?" If you said yes to one and no to the other, how can you explain the difference without just using the site names?

The structure that is designed to foster the userbase. Social Media is designed to bring in as many people as possible, in a very open-ended platform. The older types of platforms, like these forums, are designed around a community. Social Media wants as many people as possible; forums want specific people. Forums and the like have an upper limit before they break, and are best when there's a limited, distinct group of people; Social Media has no ceiling, and fails if it lacks critical mass.

It is the societal difference between having agency and being part of a community, and being oversocialized and atomized.

If you don't want to see Proctor become legally liable if some random idiot comes here and starts fedposting, you don't want to see 230 repealed without some sort of replacement to protect platform owners in a similar way.
How the fuck US legislations are relevant to Proctor? Unless he wants to move there.

just having fun imagining twitter and reddit dying, damn that would improve mankind a whole lot.
Maybe, but where would they go then? A nunch of segregated discord echo chambers? Steam chat? They'll revive AIM perhaps?

I mean the primary platforms that would be targeted are all hosted in the US

With the additional aspect of algorithm driven content and advertising revenue. The former driving "controversial" content (ragebait) and the latter driving sanitization.

There is little that can be done about the advertising part, since streaming platforms aren't exactly known for their profitability, but the former is one of the rare instances where I favor a flat out ban (though the use of algorithms to maximise engagement is of course still intimately connected to advertising. Still, not quite the same thing). Social media algorithms have done more damage to social cohesion and public discourse than anything else I can think of, and are a legitimate danger.

The traditional forum isn't perfect. Indeed, the internet itself, through its relative anonymity and screen to screen communication, more or less inevitably fell victim to, for lack of a better word, autists dragging public discourse down to the level of middle schoolers.

But while it did damage, it was nowhere near as bad as the social media algorithms that tore socialisation asunder.

First of all: who cares? Secondly: back outside, where those extroverted freaks belong.

The Internet is for the nerds. Those rest can use email to talk to each other directly, use sites to give them their plagiarized homework, and then fuck back off to their dance clubs or whatever.

Things were so, so much better when the Internet was a nerd paradise and playground, and the normies were forced into their walled shithole garden that was AOL.

Internet forums were and are still much better as they're not only more contained, but encourage actual communication - instead of the opposite, as you see on social media.

Yes, at times people will fall to mudslinging and namecalling, but that's something that will always happen. It's like when friends get along most the time, but then have heated moments where they get angry and dumb: it's not the norm, it's the exception. Social Media is the opposite: actual good, reasoned discussion is rare, while the norm is impassioned garbage.

From all I've observed, society is healthiest when most people's interactions are within their subculture, while interacting with the overarching mainstream in a limited manner. Seems like people respect each other more that way.

Now, here’s the thing, Mexico—they’ve been saying a lot of things, but let me tell you, they’re gonna pay for the wall. Absolutely. They said they wouldn’t, but they will. We’re making it happen, and it’s gonna be beautiful. They’re gonna pay for the wall, and it’s gonna be fantastic, folks. We’ve got the best people working on this, some of the smartest people. I mean, look, we’ve got a big plan, and we’re gonna do it right.

And you know who else is helping? There’s this incredible Vtuber from Indonesia, very nice country by the way, very nice people, Kaela Kovalskia. She’s a blacksmith, folks, an absolute legend, especially in Minecraft did you know she likes Minecraft? Great taste. She’s been grinding, doing her thing, mining Nether Quartz, Gold Blocks, and—get this—Netherite. The finest materials. Now, I’ve gotta tell you, folks, this is gonna make the wall even better. We’re not talking about just any wall, we’re talking about a beautiful wall, with the most incredible resources.

You’ve got the Quartz, the Netherite—some of the toughest, most valuable materials, and we’re gonna use it. We’re gonna use it all. Kaela’s been working hard, and I mean hard, mining and crafting, and we’re going to take those materials and build a wall that’s going to shine. A wall made of the best, folks. It’s gonna be powerful, it’s gonna be secure, and it’s going to send a message to the world that nobody messes with America.

We’re gonna make this wall so great, people are going to come from all over and say, ‘That’s the best wall I’ve ever seen.’ And guess what? It’ll be the best. Mexico will pay for it, Kaela’s resources will make it beautiful, and America will be safe. Big league.

But the Senate and House aren't settled! They'll likely be counting votes into the next year!

I wish that was a joke, Jesus Fucking Christ.

I believe in PISS diversity. THE PISS does not only belong to southern soap-and-carpetmunchers, it belongs to anyone, even if the one is a poor eastern european menhera trying to make a living off of the cute and funny grift.

The women that men don't want to have sex with, threatening the men who can't find women they want to have sex with, by withholding sex from them.

Great plan. Perfect. Flawless. 10/10.

Checking over a bunch of the House, there's a lot of tight races. I expect recounts. GOP taking the House is not a forgone conclusion. We'll see what happens.

Also, AP has finally called AZ for Trump. 312-226. Nice.
