The "enough of the monarchy" phase happened prior to the founding of the country. The original major parties were Federalists v. Democratic-Republicans. Then you had Democrats vs Whigs, Whigs died out and Republicans took their place around 1854-56 and things have been stable since then.

The Confederate States (Civil War South) were run by the Democrats. Up until the rise of the welfare state in post WWII era, blacks were one of the most reliably Republican constituencies.

The problem for the democrats are evidently the young coastal elites, which is highlighted remarkably well in San Francisco, where said elites do all the progressive talking points while actually gentrifying their city and segregating education. They're also the ones dominating the media despite being unable to field a candidate that can actually be elected (note that Obama and Biden were both largely disregarded by the liberal leaning media until they suddenly won, and Sanders was preferred over Hillary by a great many of them).

The problem for the republicans is that their current boss (who has alienated the traditional Republican elite to the point where half his preceding administration opposed him this election, and eliminated said traditional elite to the point of irrelevance) is not made to be much longer for this world, and my god will the infighting once he's gone be hilarious.

It's funny to me that people forget or maybe they just flat out refuse to acknowledge that President Obama had deported more immigrants than any other president in the history of the US by the time he left office. It was around 2.5 million from what I've read. He was the Deporter-In-Chief!
