I have to put my cat down tomorrow. He's been with me 16 years and his birthday was supposed to be on the 31st. Why the fuck do I have to kill my best friend? It's not fair, he was supposed to live at least ten more years man
I'm sorry for your loss man. It's never easy facing the day your best friend has to leave this world. I still miss my little buddy even after all these years. I can at least take solace that she lived happy and fulfilled for 8 good years.

Okay, this is one of my favourite pieces of art, "The Great Red Dragon" by Keith Parkinson:
View attachment 80952

You'll notice that there's an incredible amount of detail here, and obviously that detail would have taken many, many hours to draw, especially since it was done by hand. If someone wanted to create a piece of art inspired by this, they would no doubt have to draw the dragon themselves to get the pose and appearance just right, to properly convey the menace and danger the dragon poses. However, I don't see any reason that same person wouldn't consider using an AI to help with drawing the loot in front of the dragon, or for drawing the texture or background in the caverns behind the dragon. There's a lot of work there and if we've gone from lumpy, misshapen lions to "oh, the shadows and perspective lines are wrong" in less than three years, I have no doubt that AI art in the near future is going to be able to do stuff like rock textures or loot, if it can't do it already.

The actual space that AI Art tools will be useful is local areas of high detail that can just eat up time, background work and model posing. It obvious works for generating "generic hot woman in bikini" images (as the YT algo will love to let you know the instant it remembers you are male), but AI Art ends up being far more like "casting" in production manufacturing. If you're doing something custom, you can cast in the mold then you have to do clean-up steps. However much clean up depends on the product being made. It ends up being far more of an automation for tasks system than much else. Yes, it's going to kill a number of random art production jobs, but Graphic Designers are still going to always be necessary. Probably more than than ever.

It just be like that, huh

Well, because they aren't family and it's seemingly random. Dude has some good friends, though.

One of my gaming discords had to find local protective services for one of the members because he basically did that at 3 am. If someone says something out of the norm, always check on them. Not because they're thinking of offing themselves, but it means that there is something on their mind they'd like to get out.

I'm going to respond to this here instead of in the general thread because it has nothing to do with vtubers.

No, it's not Old English at all. Old English is the language in which Beowulf was written. It's basically German. Shakespeare's English is closer to Modern English than it is to Middle English, which is the language in which Chaucer wrote. Shakespeare's English, aside from the occasional archaic word, is perfectly understandable to modern readers. Chaucer's Middle English is possible to muddle through with footnotes. Old English would be incomprehensible to most readers, unless they can also read German.

Shakespeare's English is still, mostly, grammatically the same. Which is why, once you know what a couple of words became, it's not too bad. Going further back, though, it's a completely alien language. The interesting part is the supremely rapid development from the 100 years right before Shakespeare, though English's main lock-in point was the King James Bible. A fully locally translated religious text locks in a language for a very long time. The actual fact that with just basic spelling updates, a modern English speaker than still understand the original KJV is still historically incredibly wild. The stability of the European languages post-printing press is one of the far less appreciated aspects of written language.

"Sume of eow, ge synd wel, ne cymð to þǣm gefeohtstede on morrow"

I'll always love the Bard-core trend, and that translation into Anglo-Saxon is fun.

My condolences. It always is painful, but try to remember the good times and release the emotional distress.

A peaceful death with a full belly, surrounded by people who love you is a luxury rarely found in the animal kingdom. You are graceful enough to be giving him something even other humans would give anything for.

This too shall pass man. Be strong. It gets better with time.

My impression is that it hallucinates pretty bad when trying to produce fine details, even if it's not as attention-grabbing as limbs out of nowhere.

Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean to call you out specifically. People mistaking Shakespeare for Old English is just a pet peeve of mine.
Shakespeare used Plutarch's lives to construct some of his plays, so I wouldn't be surprised if he also read other extant authors like Procopius. Just you wait until Shakespeare's Secret History (written in Old English) is discovered and it turns out that he was secretly an Angelcynn patriot who railed against the tyrannical yoke of the Northmen and their descendants (just like some of the other early modern authors who larped about how everything was better under the Anglo-Saxons prior to the imposition of the Norman yoke).

To any of you who use external storage devices, how worried are you about all of your drives dying?

I have terabytes upon terabytes of stuff saved on external drives (they're backed up on other drives, but still) and it really stresses me out to think that all of it could be gone someday.

How long do your drives tend to last? Do you expect your drives that are kept in storage to be usable after a long time?

Idk how people generate so much data, I have never had more than 500 GB worth of important info to save.

Video files can be pretty big. Especially if you record game footage. 1080p 60 fps will eat up those real fast. 4k... 8k? Forgettaboutit

You can always put your porn onto tape drives, those last a long time.

I don't know what the fuck that is, but I'll look into it. Thanks.

Edit: I found one on Amazon for 4,500 dollars. Should I buy it?

I had a WD 1TB My Book. Fucker was bought in 2010 or earlier, can't fucking remember. The files should still be there, can't access it right now cos the usb and adapter port got pushed inside. WD My Book can last a long ass time. Fully recommended. Seagate's ass.

Edit: check this one, costs less and you can take it anywhere.

Don't do individual drives, always go for some kind of raid system. If you're in a spending mood get a server that can support the amount of drives you need and put them in there. Unraid is an easy operating system for beginners and allows you to combine drives with different capacity as long as the redundancy drive is the biggest. One redundancy drive allows for any one of your drives to die without data loss, two redundancy drives and two can die at once. If you're not as technically confident you can buy an off-the-shelf NAS that fit's your needs and has redundancy built in.

As for how long drives usually last: My server has 12 Drives, all around 10TB. The longest running one has been spinning continuously for over 6 years and 8 months and has spun up (i.e. been turned on) 429 times. They definitely don't all last that long and some will last much longer, it's kind of a gamble. I buy all my drives second hand, which is usually a bad call, but as long as there's redundancy I'm not worried.

5 years is a safe number on a drive. Under regular, normal use, a HDD should last 7ish. However, it's always the lack of redundancy that causes issues. One issue, though, if you want to go with a RAID NAS setup is making sure the Raid controller itself isn't the single-point of failure. Don't ask why I know that one all too well.

Cold storage SSDs would probably last for decades without issue before the cosmic ray exposure finally gets them.

Appreciate the advice. Never heard of a RAID system before. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks.
