THREAD ETIQUETTE FOR MORONS​

Before you go in and spam 20 different clips of your oshi for all to see, here are some unofficial guidelines of thread etiquette, that will make you, ever so slightly, less likely to get called a drooling retard:

1. Keep discussion around Holo, other Vtubers/Corpos can be discussed if the conversation happens to lean that way or the happening is related to Holo, otherwise use the appropriate thread. If a conversation starts on-topic but happens to derail and go on for more than a reasonable extent, be a lad and take it to general.

2. PL, roommates and such is allowed like in the rest of the site, there is no "sekrit knowledge" nor coddling anyone's fantasies here. However, do not come in here begging for PL info or asking to be spoonfed if you're a tourist, do your own research if you really wanna know, it's not that hard.

3. In a related note, reincarnations of Holos are not considered Holos anymore (no duh) and should be treated and discussed as such in accordance to point 1.

4. Holostars are allowed to be discussed, if you are a unicorn or a homobeggar then KEEP IT TO YOURSELF, this forum is on neither side of this dumb argument so go to /vt/ if the mere mention of a man makes you turn into a screeching ape. Sperging out about it will only get you laughed at.

5. Drama surrounding Holo is allowed to be discussed, you are allowed to be critical of the company and/or any talent. However, in the spirit of unbiased discussion, drama is preferably discussed in the general thread, where other users outside of the fanbase have input. If you are getting ganged up on by Holokeks then feel free to quote or screenshot the conversation and bring it to general, if you are being treated unfairly, other users will back you up.

6. Tribalism is not allowed you spear-chucking aboriginals, if you feel the need to seriously shit on other corpos or talents, whether it is merited or not, take it to general. Shitposting and quips are however allowed, anyone who cannot differentiate a joke from a maligning statement is better off leaving the site altogether.

7. Do not try to enforce any of these guidelines like some kind of discord mod, you are not and you have no power over other users. If somebody is being a retard, then laugh at them. If somebody is being seriously fucking annoying or coming in here with the express purpose of "bullying the Holokeks" then the report feature exists, let the irishman take the fall for enabling whatever authoritarian crime will be supposedly perpetuated.

RRAT PEST CONTROL​

While breeding rrats is undoubtedly a staple hobby in this industry and a fun way to speculate for some, it is undeniable that there are some theories and claims about the agency floating around and being spread like peer-reviewed gospel that have to be constantly called out for being blatantly false. So let this OP be a handy FAQ that you can easily quote to stop already disproven arguments from happening again.

Spoiler: THE SHAREHOLDERS

"The shareholders are in control of the company, and thus responsible for (insert bad thing) happening to the company"
FALSE. Shareholders of Cover Corp each own a miniscule amount of the currently distributed shares, with the largest ones not even owning 10%. Yagoo and other execs currently own the vast majority of the shares in circulation. Furthermore, these shares do not even give those who hold them voting power in the company, only financial reports and attendance at meetings where they can SUGGEST things, transcripts of these meetings are regularly published in english if you want to read them.

"Cover went public because of corpo greed"
FALSE. Cover went public due to their VC funding rounds done in 2017, 2018 and 2020, to allow their private investors to cash out.View attachment 93226

"Blackrock is gonna make Cover go woke"
FALSE. Blackrock owns 0.5% of Cover stock as of the writing of this OP, and as said before, owning any amount of stock does not give them voting privileges or control over the company. Furthermore, many investment funds like Blackrock routinely invest in hundreds of companies simply out of procedure, this does not mean Blackrock or any other company is planning a takeover of Cover.

"Shareholders are stealing money from the talents"
FALSE. Cover's shareholders do not get dividends or any direct financial gain from the company, they simply play with each other's money. Any revenue generated by Cover is kept by the company.

"The talents claimed the company's direction has changed! Some of them even chalked it up to Cover going public!"
SPECULATION. Talents claiming the company's direction "has changed" could be anything, there is little to no proof this is referring to going public. As for the few talents like Lamy or Towa that have directly mentioned Cover "becoming publicly traded" as a "change" have most likely done so as a way to express the notion of the company's growth and transformation into a true corporation, with IPO in Japan being seen as "the thing big corpos do" and a sign of corporate success. This point is not always negative, and both talents cited used it in a contemplative, neutral way, to reflect on how the company is now versus how it was when they joined.

Shareholders have a very bad rep in most circles (with good reason), but their effect on Cover's decision making and course is minimal at best. The company's actions are their own and should not be chalked up to some convenient boogieman.

"Too many talents have cited "differences in direction", this must mean the company is in shambles"
SPECULATION. "Differences in direction" is a stock response that seems to have been recently implemented for graduations as a form of PR. There has never been an official answer from any talent as to what this means and it is very likely to be a catch-all term which includes many different talent reasonings. As always, neither the talent nor the company will ever tell you the full story as to why the split happened.

"Loosing A-chan is causing the bleeding/Her leaving was a sign of things to come"
SPECULATION. A-chan's most likely reason for leaving was to take care of a family member, a common thing in Japan's aging society. Corroborating this was her 3-month leave immediately previous to her retirement, which again, was for the same stated reason. There is no information of her influence or position within the company, relating to company direction or the treatment talents got, only that she encouraged a couple of the talents to not quit in the past, something that is not unique to her.

"Kneeling to China again is causing talents to leave"
SPECULATION. Literally no talent has ever referenced this as reasoning for their departure. Hololive's return to china has been mostly driven by Holo ID and been minimal. The most likely reason for Cover's return to Bilibili is to gain chinese gacha game perms.

"Too many events/travelling are causing talents to leave"
SPECULATION. Literally no talent has ever referenced this as reasoning for their departure. Hololive is widely known among Vtubers as an Idol-like agency, focused on music production and events, it is very unlikely anyone would apply and get accepted knowing this.

SPECULATION/SUBJECTIVE. There is no concrete information out there on the inner workings of Hololive Productions or Cover Corp, everything you may hear online is purely speculative or made up entirely. It is however undeniable that they have changed in scope, size and operations.

When Cover started they had 2 employees and the company was mainly in the business of experimental VR and AR tech. The early years from Sora's debut to Gen 3 were remarkably rudimentary and amateurish as many talents have talked about, ranging from Korone's nightmare of a debut, to Gen 1 literally hiring someone who leaked talent info, to Gen 2 being given an Iphone and simply told to "stream" without any kind of training or even knowing who their genmates were. This was not just because Hololive was new and small, but also because the entire industry was and nobody really knew what worked best or what was off-limits.

After 2020 and the boom, Holo found themselves as the fastest growing Vtuber company EVER, holding some of the most valuable IPs in the industry and constantly driving their foot into PR nightmares due to them still being very few people behind the scenes. The years since have seen the company become exponentially more complex to handle this growth and change to become a lot more professional and strict, partly due to the desire to not repeat the mistakes of the past.

These changes may be the reason some talents do not enjoy working in the company anymore, we do not know for certain, and everyone is entitled to preferring the way things used to be, but the life cycle of companies simply leads to more bureaucracy as they grow, specially Japanese companies. This growth does have a positive side, as it allows for bigger opportunities and more stability for the talents in exchange for some of their freedoms. It allows for things like fes to be better than ever as opposed to the first fes, which old fans may remember actually went down live, which the technical staff had to scramble to fix.

"The company takes too much money"
SPECULATION. The revenue share between the talents and Cover has never been made public, the only info we have is passing claims by some talents from years ago and notions that some revenue streams have better cuts than others. What IS known is that Cover does not usually pay for the talent's personal projects, but they do allow the talent to borrow money on a zero interest loan from the company.

"Cover is stupid for caring about game/music perms, my favorite corpo/streamer doesn't care and they're fine"
FALSE. Cover cares about perms because they are a Japanese company based in Tokyo and are thus subject to the intricacies and general draconian nature of Japan's copyright legislation, which does not recognize the concept of fair use.

Your favorite streamer ignores copyright because they are either 1. Based in a country that recognizes fair use, like the United States or 2. An individual. Individuals are rarely if ever targeted by rights holders because it is simply too costly and tedious to sue every single infringing person, companies are much bigger targets, and have much bigger pockets which can be plundered by litigious individuals or other companies.

In fact, Cover's fear of copyright takedowns is well earned, they used to not ask for perms to stream games until they were hit with the "Copyright apocalypse" of 2020, where HUNDREDS of VODs were made private and in some cases like Subaru's channel, deleted altogether. Where Mio's channel was almost DELETED by Capcom, something they literally admitted to doing on purpose to teach Cover a lesson.

The matter of Cover's expediency when handling perms is another issue altogether and generally subjective.

"Getting into Hololive means you will be famous regardless"
SOPHISTRY. While this claim is technically true, getting into Hololive in the first place is not easy.

MISCONCEPTION. Cover requested unpaid art revisions on art they did pay for, which is a sadly common practice in Japanese corpos. The Japanese gov organization which called out Cover was looking to implement new regulation to end the practice, and they didn't "call out" Cover, they actually notified Cover and Cover paid their dues in full, which the governmental agency then used as an example of a company infringing. The entire situation had already been resolved by the time it went public.

This is corroborated by the fact that Cover released an announcement talking about it at the exact same time as the government, which indicates that they already knew this was happening and contrary to rumors they were not in fact investigated in secret and "caught in the act".
