I was thinking of the Russian Status-6 drones, WW2 guided munitions started out so primitive in comparison to modern tech that I don't really consider them the same thing. Fly by wire torpedoes are not capable of the same independent operations that modern drones are, and you're certainly not getting them back into the sub afterwards.

So from all the Jersey drone reports, looks like the US is pretty much confirmed to be showing off/doing drills with a new submarine stealth drone platform. I'm sure I'm behind the times since I don't go on the farms, but apparently there have been several people who have spotted them coming out of the ocean in large batches now. It was only a matter of time, people have been talking about the possibility of drone subs for years at this point and there have been forays into sub-deployed underwater drones for years now.

The interesting thing to me is that IIRC the new class of US military submarine won't be constructed, much less in service, until the 2030s. I wonder if the US has managed to build full size subs in secret, if they've made drone subs that are completely autonomous and therefore small enough to build without people noticing, or if they've managed to retrofit older subs to deploy them/design the drones to work out of torpedo tubes or something. If they managed to figure out an easy way to get water-to-air stealth drones to deploy out of old subs that's an even bigger deal than a fully modern drone sub would be. Means their deployment would only be limited by drone production, not sub production, and that any US ally could have them (the Australia sub deal comes to mind, for various reasons).

If they are sub launching drones then they have probably retrofitted an Ohio class like they have already done to a few of the boats as cruise missile platforms. I don't think any of the attack boats are large enough to carry & launch multiple drones of that size. The Virginia's can only piggyback one rescue or special forces sub for example.

I had heard that these drones are the size of a car, so a Trident launch tube would be the only practical launcher. An Ohio has 24 tubes so they could be pre-packaged to launch at any time.
It's all theoretical anyway, I don't really see the need for sub launched drones as the US has airfields close to any theatre where they may be needed and can launch Globals to do the job.
Reconnaissance would be the only reason, there is no point in loading them out for attack when a stand off cruise missile would do the job more effectively.

The feds must love the invention and proliferation of consumer drones as it gives them a much easier excuse to give the masses. Compare this to the spikes of "UFO" sightings that would occur whenever the F-117 or B2 were deployed.

Oh yeah, if it was attack boat based I think they'd have already been completely outed by the locals, I'm sure everybody and their mother is flying drones around Jersey looking for surface stuff. I also agree that in the modern age it's almost impossible to make a sub in secret, IIRC the US sub program only just now started getting more funding again anyways. What I would bet money on though, is that these drones fit into the one of the upgraded delivery systems that they put into the Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia. The other 14 Ohio-classes that haven't been refitted (that we know of) are way too valuable as nuclear deterrents to be fucking around off the Jersey shore. That means any ship with Tomahawk tubes might be able to use them, which means that the UK may also have access to these if need be. Veerrrry interesting IMO.

EDIT: I double-checked the size of the Tomahawks, they have an 8 ft wingspan so they really might work with these drones IMO

Also, since these things have no heat signature to speak of and can come in underwater, they're going to be incredibly difficult to defend against with current defense systems. At night, against another ship? I don't know how you'd manage to deal with these, especially since they apparently have enough range to be showing up over half of New Jersey every night and still make it back by morning.

The most interesting explanation I've seen is that 1) They're most likely our drones, and 2) they're searching for something using sensors and in a way they can't be up front with the general public. The conspiracy side thinks it's a suitcase nuke - as horrifying as that thought is.

This one doesn't really pass the Occam's razor check for me, because what could possibly be the point. To my understanding, there's no such thing as an untraceable nuclear device, so if you're a country planning to conduct a nuclear attack on US soil, lobbing ICBMs just gets to the same result quicker.

I don't think it's the whole weapon system and it might only be the radiation source in the weapon. The source itself can easily be transported on a wooden pallet.

Someone a while ago told me that one nukes worth of radioactive material can fit in a suitcase. Don't quote me in that.

Also knowing how unorganized the US military is it may have just been left on a base somewhere or it may have never left it's origin destination. There are literally thousands of accounts of the military doing stuff like leaving an experimental tank in a field for 30 years.
