im looking forward to this happening so i can continue to not care about modern gaming and pump some extra thousand hours or so into Mount and Blade on my 1k dollar rig (Warband Runs on 256mb of Vram and a Core 2 duo)
We've been lucky to have some smaller dev teams pump out 1-2 great games for the past few years like Balatro, Schedule 1, Palworld, and Crime Scene Cleaner. Unironically the game I'm waiting for the most is Kingmakers

I don't care if Nintendo finally drops a good Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake. I refuse to spend $70 on a game in this current age of gaming. There's no fucking way I'm spending $80 to $90 for a game, and especially not for a game locked on a console.

I got a fat backlog of games on PC, previous consoles, roms/rom hacks, and games with near limitless replay value to last me a life time while I drop money on cheaper games.
Yeah, Nintendo could crash the gaming industry with this move and it wouldn't bother me because my Steam backlog is fat enough to last me through whatever bullshit the industry goes through.

Also, they had ARMS last time. This time was "No Legs". Someone on the team clearly started the idea as a joke and it somehow became a tech demo game.
ARMS has a leg up to this game because, despite ARMS being kind of a tech demo game using the joycons' gyro/motion controls it had a nice cast of characters (Spring Man, Twintelle and Min-min) . This game, while funny, lacks that charm being robot people with giant wheelchair legs and probably a baked in free seasonal pass for cosmetics to customize them (like in Splatoon 3).

Probably made by a different dev team at Nintendo. IIRC ARMS was made by the devteam that primarily works on games like Mario Kart.

i suspect it will use mii's rather then actual characters .

it does honestly remind me of a wii fitness leftover (not that that's a bad thing)

I don't think a Nintendo game is worth $80. The investment time and cost of a Mario kart game, Pokemon, or Zelda, or any other Nintendo franchise, does not justify that cost. Nintendo rips its fandom off badly, selling what are essentially well-polished A or AA games with AAA prices.

Final Fantasy XVI reportedly cost $60m to develop. Do you think Nintendo spent around the same amount of money making a Mario Kart game, or do you think they might have spent a lot less than that?

If you can't see a staggering difference in cost of development between the two I don't know how to help you.

Nintendo doesn't publish their budgets, but it's not inconceivable that what looks to be the biggest Mario Kart yet with very few reused assets could cost between 50 and 100 million.
Also, I don't get why people are ignoring the fact that 80% of MK World copies will be sold for $50 as a bundle and not for $80.

Yeah Kart definitely cost more :smugpipi:

why is this the retarded metric your measuring game price by? Instead of lemme get the list here *ahem*

How well made the game is.(Cost as Quality) How much time you spend playing the game.(Cost as Time) How much fun you have/had with it (Cost as Entertainment)

Instead of the arbitrary amount of money they threw at the thing or are you telling me AC Shadows is worth a damn.

This isn't about how "fun" a game is, you can have fun with a cheap game, and you can find an expensive game boring or unengaging. AAA is loosely defined by how high development and advertising costs are for a game, and I don't think Nintendo games are AAA games, or warrant AAA pricing.

So you're just going to ignore the figure I posted before?
Also, real convenient to determine the status of AAA on a number that many developers don't even make public.
But even if you do very generous calculations for just basic labour cost, you arrive at AAA Budgets for most Nintendo blockbusters.
270 Developers on Mario Odyssey over four years will cost 40 million in salary before you factor in any other costs.

How did Tears of the Kingdom cost $100m when they're using a near-identical map and engine as Breath of the Wild, released on the same console? What am I missing here?

- 6 year development time
- Novel physics engine developed from the ground up
- Two new layers to the map, as well as numerous changes to the existing landscape to make use of new traversal methods and physics engine

I don't really know what you see as the indicators for expensive development. Is it just about photo-realism?

Nintendo games are not triple A because of an arbitrary metric decided by you.

I didn't realize you were video james the king of all video games.

also completely ignoring everything to cherry pick what you reply to.

Rain if your gonna act like a Journo I'm gonna have to confiscate your balls.

I didn't know this, thanks for telling me.

When I think of a AAA game, I think high budget, which is not only evidenced by high-quality graphics, but also stories involving large casts, expansive environments, complex game systems that interact with eachother, and so forth. I don't see a lot of this with Nintendo games.

Rivals news - looks like Emma Frost's model finally leaked. Though this feels more like an alternative costume than baseline.

Edit: Double update - Switch 2 will play Switch 1 games via emulation apparently.

You may want to temper excitement for the new fromsoft game, as it's a PvPvE multiplayer game.
All Souls games and Elden Ring could be defined as PvPvE.
