From what I (admittedly vaguely) remember with Zoey it was less trying to legitimise it herself and more being a dumb bitch who'd already fell for it and got defensive because of that. It's why you have to be especially careful with these subjects because paedophiles are manipulative and will latch on to whatever cause it is individuals are sympathetic toward to in an attempt to bait their validation, and because a lot of people are emotionally fragile or just plain stupid, it works.
