I think a big reason Vtubing doesn't have those interesting niches is the origins of the vtubing boom in the west relied on people staying in doors and not having any money for a long time period. The type of people simply aren't there. Also the scene when it comes to internet creation has changed by a lot

I think many of those autists moved to vtubers, but that creative output is spread across all different oshis and corpos. People are still making videos and video games and fanfics and art and mods, but it's spread across many hundreds of different vtubers and we just ignore stuff outside of our fandoms, so that output doesn't appear to be as much as it previously did.

As far as I've been able to see there's no real fanfic scene for vtubers or even just hololive. It's all either porn or even worse, self-insert porn. Even if someone has written a huge epic using hololive lore as the base there's no good place for it to get exposure anyways. Not like with the really old "classics" of mlp:fim fics. People don't really seem interested in that sort of thing which kind of separates vtubers from other big fandoms that all had an active fanfiction scene. Star Wars, Naruto, Pokemon, 40K, etc.
