They were one of Simon Fuller's groups (the guy behind American Idol) and he was notorious for exploiting pop artists he worked with, and there were rumours they were being paid fuck all despite being one of the most popular artists at the time. I remember that specifically because you could hear the girl start trying to move the conversation along with a safe "we're lucky to be where we are" spiel which would've probably appeased the interviewer, but the producer shutting it down told everyone what they needed to know.
