Can a SEA person explain, are Malaysia and Philippines that fundamentally different culture-wise towards the Internet, or is it down to individual family differences? Why is Erina's family broadly supportive of her side-career, while Jelly "had a physical altrecation" last time her mom discovered her being an anime girl and now has to lie that she's "employed at a Canadian company as a musician"?
While true in setting Filipino culture apart from Malay culture, there's more to it than that.

90% of EN-speaking Malaysian (and Indonesian) influencers are actually Chinese-Malaysian, Chindo, or Chinese-Singaporean*. That's because the Chinese minority in those countries is relatively wealthy due to arriving in two relatively wealthy waves: traders and settlers before European involvement, and rich landowners fleeing the Japanese before WW2. Therefore their descendants have kept a very segregated minority, and are middle-class people who marry among their own culture, learn English in school, live in cities, have computers/internet, and their children are western-style weebs. To me it's almost 100% certain Jelly is actually Chinese-Malaysian rather than ethnically Malay, just based on her accent and the way she acts, and the fact that she speaks nothing but English on stream rather than spitting out a few words of Malay every now and then.

The Philippines has a different colonial history. They were colonized by the Spanish real hard, converted to Catholicism, and a lot of the subtle differences in culture between islands was wiped out. The Chinese minority there isn't the same either. While there are plenty of similarities to Indonesian or even Malaysian peoples, if we are then comparing an average Filipino to the Chinese minority in Malaysia, and it's just a completely different cultural background. Bigger family focus, different set of values.

So to bring that down to Jelly and Erina, Jelly likely has a hardass chinese mom for whom Computer Science is a second choice already, and Erina's family is just far more casual about what she does (and possibly thinks what she does won't matter after she marries).

I guess I could be wrong, if Jelly really is Malay it would come down a bit more to family differences. But I don't think I am.

No one knows. She has asked chat to guess more than ones and apparently we missed every time. Going by the little she let out I guess is something humanities/art related.

Its weird (at least for me) that she has PT in college, tho.

Ffs, did she say why?
Nope, I've had a few different thoughts on why she's always playing stuff only off-stream or when she does shit like finish a game she started on stream off but her own actions keep conflicting with those.

The only thing I can think of is that she brainworms a bit over playing videogames and getting too hyper focused and not talking for a while but I haven't really noticed that, she does it way more during art streams. It's why most of her streams are Yap/Karaoke these days. I would assume Sakana beat it into her head or something cause she used to stream a lot more games before Phase.

She and others have all mentioned him being against them playing these kinds of games but not only does Lumi playing a significant amount of them and RTS but the Civ streams were some of Pippa's best. Plus he just hired Clio who got popular by playing those games.

Muyu mentioned in her members stream she wants to play Civ and EU4 with Clio, tragically she also stated she only plans to do it off stream.
:painpeko:

Then we simply watch Cilo's POV, you silly goose.

She's said a long time back that she doesn't really think she'll stream strategy games in general because she finds them slow, so I assume she feels it wouldn't be interesting content. Not sure why she would think that still when Clio is very well known for playing EU4, and Lumi plays strategy games every Sunday, and people really enjoy that. She brought up possibly playing RTS games like AOE, which leads into the next possible reason....

She starts talking about a friend who streamed Starcraft and there was a lot of toxic people during the stream, and she's scared of that. That friend is almost certainly Amiya, who streamed SC about a year prior to this stream and was so put-off and upset by the backseaters and toxic comments that she said she would never play SC on stream again, possibly any strategy games.

A real shame because I was really hoping to see Muyu play some strategy games when she debuted, but sadly, no luck.

As for Jelly's situation, I think some of it just comes down to her parents' perception of making money off of streaming on the Internet. They don't have a problem with her making money by making music apparently, but they seem to have a negative perception of streaming. She said once they think that streaming is "being a promiscuous woman":

I can't find where she says this, but I also remember her saying something like one or both of her parents being angry and feeling like she was wasting her education by being a streamer. I think they paid/helped pay for her education or something. Don't quote me on that because I can't find the source.

So really, I think it is just a mix of cultural influences and individual reasons. As others have said, the cultural level either by living in Malaysia and maybe being influenced by the culture around them, though based on what she's said, her family is not Muslim because she went to Christian school, or more likely, just the stereotypical Asian parent experience.

It's a real shame, but she does have a good relationship with her parents now that she doesn't live with them anymore, at least.

Being fair, looking at most large female streamers, both vtuber and flesh streamers, on twitch, the platform dedicated to streaming, it is easy to get that idea.

There's also the heavy American influence on the Philippines, as the American occupation after the Spanish-American War implanted many American values that don't exist in Malaysia. Fun fact: Filipinos are the first Asian group to arrive in the Americas due to the Spanish. Hell, back when Texas was under the control of Spain, the land was called the New Kingdom of the Philippines (Nuevo Reino de Filipinas) tell New Spain collapsed in 1821. There's a timeline where Texas is called the New Philippines and Texans are New Filipinos, similar to how residents of New Mexico are called New Mexicans.

late but

1. if you kiss your chat you're gfe (or bfe)
2. I feel like if you could manifest the concept of shame into a physical form and shape it into an object (a bat, maybe) with which you could then beat a phase beggar to death, he still would not recognize it. In fact his final words would be along the lines of, "that bat should join phase invaders"

Saying Phasebegging is wrong when the biggest Phasebeggar, Pipkin Pippa, got two nepo picks for Phase Invaders Quest (I fully approve).

I see you've never been to A&H back on homeland.:smugpipi:
I really miss that dude with the HK avatar that used to do deep dives into all the docs during Russiagate. Stopped using A&H after he stopped posting.

On the topic of Erina and Jelly, we also have to remember that Jelly has finished college to my knowledge while Erina is still in school. So vtubing to Erina's family might just be looked at as a temporary job while in college, where Jelly's family might see her as trying to make it a career and putting off getting a "real" job which would hurt her in the long run since she's "wasting" her prime years to setup a well paying job using her degree.
