I would have tuned in if one of my oshis wasn't streaming an outfit reveal (she is planning to do a watchalong of it this month, though!). The Thing hits all the right horror buttons for me. I hate cheap jump scares. Suspense, atmosphere, and storytelling will always reign supreme for what I like in a horror movie. The fact that The Thing is all of those plus the body horror, sci fi, and lovecraftian horror aspects just elevates it to perfection, imo.

It is a shame sci fi horror is so sparse, nowadays. I think it a well of untapped potential.

I do look forward to the day that modern horror films start steering away from torture porn and cheap jump scares aided by the film score.

As a big fan of horror movies, I hate this trend so much. Cheap jump scares are one thing, but to constantly warn the audience that it's coming up with loud music is such a cheap and lazy (and ineffective, in my opinion) way to build up suspense.

One of my favorite scenes in a more "modern" horror movie was from The Strangers when the man in the mask showed up in the house for the first time. While it didn't scare me, the fact there was no music, lead up, warning, or even camera focus was a breath of fresh air at the time in more mainstream horror movies.
