Family members don't have to be backstabbers. That's a choice they make. Sadly, not everyone is blessed with a competent family. My sympathies for those that don't have that.

My reason for disliking relatives is that you do not choose them, you can end up with a bunch of retarded/selfish/malicious people in your circle by literal chance. At least co-workers and friends you can more or less choose to associate with or not. Anyway, if your life was all roses and rainbows then you won't get it, having your own flesh and blood keep secrets and spread malicious rumors about your own parents while they happily interact with diagnosed psychopaths and fraudulent thieves that have stolen thousands from their own siblings will kill any trust you have in "family".

Usually if you had a good time you were either too young to notice or someone (probably one of your parents, uncles or grandparents) is the patriarch or matriarch who keeps everyone in check, once that person dies you will see the scramble as everyone tries to throw everyone else to the curb for money or the deceased's property. If even then you never noticed anything then you are either purposefully being kept in the dark or your parents made the wise choice to distance themselves from the trash when you were young.

Best of luck to her as she gets up there in age, then. We've seen plenty of instances where people have had this same mindset who went on to regret it when this became much harder to obtain in their older age.
