Translated information was taken from this clip and the hololive Fan Server Discord. The event will divided into two phases that will use different servers. This is the PvE phase.

Rules and information

• The server will last from April 19th, 19:00 JST to April 29th.
• The server will run 24/7.
• The map seed is 649861369.
• Viewers must not relay information from other streams.
• PvP will be at an absolute minimum. PvP is allowed as long as the involved parties consent to it first.

And now for the recap. This post was used as a base. I'm also going to link to this post by Shuba Saber summarizing a part of what happened.

Spoiler: Day 6 recap

• Koyori logs on. She plans to take down a Bradley today with the rocket launcher. While checking out her place and seeing how things have been she finds out that her horse has died.
• Another easter egg hunt begins. It is the last day of Rust's Easter egg event. Koyori is the only one online so she's unopposed and gets 73 eggs.
• After some preparation and waiting for a Huey to pass, Koyori heads off to fight the Bradley. She starts fighting the Bradley from a roof but ends up dying. Koyori is able to head back and try again. After some time she destroyed the Bradley. There's no dismounted NPC's either, so Koyori considers this a win. She left the area to do something else until the fire burns out and she collects the loot. She got another M249.
• Koyori had another unopposed easter egg hunt. She got 60 eggs.
• Koyori was camping at the launch site to wait for another Bradley to spawn when another egg hunt starts. Koyori only picked up a few eggs to be on the board. Meanwhile, Flare cruised to first place with 85 eggs.
• Flare suddenly finds Fubuki inside her base. The two decide to take a boat to raid he southwestern oil rig.
• Meanwhile, Koyori engages another Bradley. She heard a helicopter but it was just a Chinook. It did fire its machine guns at Koyori, forcing her to take cover. She decides to wait it out until it leaves. Koyori destroyed the Bradley and got the L96 sniper rifle.
• Flare and Fubuki had cleared out the oil rig and wait for the NPC reinforcements. While the two were dealing with the reinforcements, another egg hunt begins. As a result, Koyori is unopposed yet again.
• When Flare and Fubuki were returning from the oil rig, Fubuki said that she had gotten 6000 scrap from gambling. Fubuki said that licking her tail brings good fortune, so Flare does it.
• At a recycler, Flare accidentally recycles her bag. To add insult to injury, another egg hunt starts a few minutes later. Koyori was gone by this point, so Fubuki won with 78 eggs.
• Later, Flare played blackjack and managed to get some big wins. Subaru comes over to play as well. Subaru wasn't fairing very well and said that she has 21 scrap left. Flare decides to give 305 scrap to Subaru, and says she has to become her underling.
• Flare types in chat that she and Subaru will become Fubuki's underlings. The two subsequently win in blackjack. Fubuki arrived and Subaru licks Fubuki's tail. Subaru lost 500 scrap sometime after.
• Flare and Fubuki went to the arctic water treatment plant. They wait around for the boxes to open up. They killed time by hunting polar bears. Another easter egg hunt took place with Nene also participating. Fubuki won with 75 eggs. The loot ended up being not worth it and Flare and Fubuki went back to base.
• Nene hears Marine talking while in her house. Nene eventually comes over to Marine who was working on finishing the Miko and Subaru Sexy Garden artwork. Marine takes Nene inside and Nene starts drawing on the blank paintings. The result is, well... see it for yourself.
• Pekora has been finishing up the event area. She's busy testing out the dance floor and music that will play. AZKi has also been helping out in getting everything ready for the party.
• Many of the girls are currently hanging out at Miko and Subaru's place. Subaru is taking pictures of those hanging out at the pools, such as Koyori and Nene.
• Koyori was asked by Subaru and Miko to record a voice line for her, which Koyori agrees and she gives the voice line.
• Koyori takes a visit to Luna's farm to get some pumpkins from her vending machine. She remarks the song/tune that Luna has playing on repeat when you visit the area is the same one you hear in Japanese supermarkets.
• Subaru and Miko work on decorating some banners for their area.
• Another egg hunt begins. Even though there's lots of members online, only five are actively partaking in the egg hunt. Koyori wins in the egg hunt with 81 eggs.
• Nene and Botan head down to raid the underground subway together. Nene ends up dying from one of the NPC's leaving Botan behind. Nene is able to get herself back to the subway and get her items back with the help of Botan. After returning the two continue on their raid. Nene and Botan find a subway cart and get it working. The ride the cart down the rails, taking down NPC's on the way. While the two were exploring firther Nene dies again.
• Subaru wonders what she should write for her Shion artwork. Marine suggests writing "BFF". Subaru asks if Shion would even know what it means .Miko asks what that means and Subaru goes "See?".
• Pekora recruits some of the members like Au and Chihaya to help create firework designs for tonight. In order for them to do so however they'll need to touch the TC box first. After that they can get to work making a fireworks design. Koyori also comes by to work on firework designs. She makes a design that recalls to the design she infamously made back in season 1 of Rust a few years back. Su and Chihaya make symbols that represent Shion. Pekora then makes a neon sign that reads "Fireworks" in Japanese. Pekora finishes off the neon sign and shows it to AZKi.
• Vivi has been busy exploring the arctic water treatment plant area by herself.
• Miko makes her own set of fireworks nearby her area and gives them a test run. Seeing the fireworks all piled up on to of each other in one spot gives her a laugh. The fireworks seem to spell out Marine ma. Marine takes a look and gives her thoughts on them.
• Vivi joins up with Pekora as another member to help make fireworks. Koyori, Su, and Chihaya continue to make their own designs. Subaru also comes by to help out. She makes some designs on the photos in the event area.
• Biboo logs online and asks her spies when the next egg hunt is expected to occur. She takes a look at her base and sees there's been some changes since she last logged on. She goes to check everything. She sees that the bikes were nicely parked, probably from Calli.
• Ririka logs onto the server for the first time. She spawned naked on the beach in the southern east area. While Ririka explores around, and fixes up her microphone settings, Biboo comes across her in the game. Biboo is there to help her out if needed. It seems like Ririka is having trouble with her voice chat settings. Biboo offers her help.
• Shion writes a letter for Choco in the game. She then writes a letter to Pekora.
• Many members (Pekora, Chihaya, Su, Matsuri) are now making their own drawings of Shion for the event. Botan is also taking pictures of the members hanging out there.
• Biboo arrives at the event venue ahead of time. She comes across Nene who's singing SSS and cheers along. Botan and Koyori are also there playing the instruments, and Biboo joins them on the drums. Polka is there too and chats with Biboo. Botan takes pictures of the members playing on the stage. Nene also sings Our Bright Parade and Biboo joins along.
• Anya logs on and realizes her horse has died so she has to quickly run over to the event area. Anya is able to make it to the venue just in time.
• Ririka was able to make it to the event area thanks to spawning in Biboo's camper car that's parked at the event venue. Biboo meets up with Ririka to make sure she's okay. Pekora also greets her too. Ririka still has voice chat issues so Pekora helps her out.
• Sora logs on and asks AZKi to help her in finding the fireworks area. AZKi takes the helicopter over to pick Sora up. AZki returns to her base in order to transfer to a bigger helicopter to also pick up Shion and Choco. AZKi dropped them off at the event venue.
• Vivi and Biboo meet up and the two keep repeating "nnnnnn VIVI!" to each other, with Anya also watching the two of them. Vivi is asking Biboo for scrap, but Anya is telling Biboo not to give her any. Biboo instead gives Vivi an egg. Biboo does give Anya scrap because she is a senpai, the senpai tax. Biboo: "If i give you scrap will you gamble with me later?" Anya agrees to it. Now Anya owns Biboo gambling, and Vivi learns about the senpai tax. Now Biboo and Anya are trying to senpai tax Vivi. Vivi eventually gives in to the senpai tax.

The big event and fireworks show:

• At the venue, Nene uses the microphone to bring everyone over to the stage area. They'll be doing a stage how. Nene, proceeds to sing Our Bright Parade while Chihaya and others play on the instruments, with the others cheering along. Pekora had asked Nene to perform the concert for everyone to help buy time while Pekora and AZKi fly back home to pick up their drawing of Shion that they got yesterday. This also allows time for others to finish up their drawings for Shion.
• Shion goes around and admires at the artwork and messages that people have left for her. Others also do the same as well while waiting for Pekora and AZKi.
• Next up Nene sings her original song of Giragira Fan Meeting. Everyone generally dances along and goofs around on the instruments. Meanwhile Biboo looks to figure out how they set up all the electrical wiring. She also takes a look at the photos that were taken from the last few days.
• Everyone is hanging out now at the gallery looking at everyone's artwork and messages for Shion. Some members are making some last minute artworks like Vivi and Anya. Biboo also works on adding the finishing details to hers.
• AZKi (or the staff) change the time so its automatically nighttime for the fireworks.
• They display Raora's drawing of Shion. And everyone rushes over to look at it. Everyone is amazed at Raora's work and they start calling her Raora-sensei. Shion also sees Vivi's artwork next to it and calls her Vivi-sensei. Shion is also taking pictures of the artwork and members next to it.
• AZKi and Pekora then call everyone over to the stage. AZKi serves as the MC as Pekora heads over to the fireworks and lights them up. The fireworks show officially begins! (Meanwhile at this time Marine is continuing her work on her Shion drawing). Shion and the others get amazed by the custom firework drawings of her symbols. Some of the firework drawings get a laugh out of the girls. There's also a firework of FG for Flow Glow, along with a carrot and bakemono. Also a firework of a golden egg. As the fireworks continue the laser show starts up playing Shion's original song. The fireworks also spell out "SHION", but each letter is shown 3 times before the next one, which gets a laugh out of everyone. As the fireworks continue and Shion's song plays some members start playing on their instruments. The fireworks after Shion's name is a drawing from Vivi, along with Hololive, a Nekko head, and a heart.
• Eventually the firework show comes to an end. AZKi gets on the microphone and thanks everyone for coming today. Suddenly lanterns spawn all over the ground. There's a bit of confusion around on what to do next. So the members wander around and chat. The lanterns suddenly disappear. Pekora and AZKi work on be fixing them. Everyone else wanders about chatting and looking at the artwork on the wall.
• Marine's game crashes while this is going on. She does her best to restart the game.
• AZKi re-gathers everyone back to the stage. AZKi re-explains what they plan to do with the lanterns. Anya helps to translate to Biboo. So everyone gets a lantern, torch, and fuel from the chest, and then they'll place it on the ground and light it up. They also have to make sure to touch the TC first if they haven't yet. Biboo doesn't have a torch so Anya tries to help her out. To help better organize this, the server staff write down a message in the game chat (both English and Japanese) explaining the instructions. Everyone releases the sky lanterns and they fly up into the sky.
• Everyone now gathers for a picture. The server gets changed to daytime to get a better picture. Choco is the one who will take the picture. Everyone poses and emotes for the picture. After Choco takes the picture, Subaru and Miko move about to take a picture of Shion, Subaru, and Choco together (gen 2). After the photo taking, everyone gives their thanks for today, concluding today's event.
• Pekora and Shion head over to Raora's drawing where Choco takes a picture of them. Pekora explains the drawing to Shion. During this time Biboo comes over to ask for scraps, which Pekora quickly gives. Shion realizes the studio name "R-18".
• While the event has generally concluded, most members are still hanging out around chatting and having fun. Biboo wonders if Raora was watching the stream. She says that the group loved her work and that they got their money for it.
• Some of the members are admiring Marine's drawing of Subaru and Miko that she is still finishing up.

Late Night (JST) Hours:

• Anya invites Biboo over to head to Subaru and Miko's place. It'll be opened at 20:00 JST. Subaru gives an advertisement for it. Subaru asks Biboo about going to Sexy Garden. Biboo will take Anya in her car to the Sexy Garden. Other members head on over to the Bunny Garden place. On the way, Anya explains to Biboo how the Sexy Garden will work there.
• Many members are hanging out at the party at Sexy Garden area.
• The next egg hunt occurs. Lots of members are wandering about collecting eggs. Biboo wins with 91 eggs.
• Subaru, Nene Miko, Mio, Botan, Koyori, Sora, Anya, and Marine are all hanging out around the Sexy Garden area. Biboo enters and admires at the artwork and establishments of the Sexy Garden. Anya meets up with Biboo and helps to show her around.
• Biboo is given a water gun from Subaru to shoot at Mio and Miko. Anya, Marine, and others also shoot with the water gun. Subaru gives instructions to Biboo in English. Subaru later says to pay up scrap in both Japanese and English. Subaru then shows Biboo around some of the Sexy Garden establishments.
• Pekora meanwhile reads her letter from Shion outside of their house.
• AZKi takes a break to do some fishing at Flare's fishing spot.
• Miko and Marine are enjoying some one on one time together in a special room.
• Subaru then takes the members over to the outdoor jail area where Subaru are Marine are inside. Many members are watching them. Subaru and Marine put on a show/performance for everyone watching outside of jail (including to be Biboo, Anya, Mio, Botan, Koyori, Miko, and Kanade).
• Shion and Choco are busy adding more photos to the outside of their house.
• Subaru and Kanade are the next members to be in jail and their performance is more comedic than anything. Subaru then says that if they liked the performance to give them scrap.
• While Pekora takes on a Huey that is arriving from her tower. While she is busy trying to shoot down a Huey, she gets a notification that she won a Switch 2. She screams with huge excitement over it. Pekora ends up dying from the helicopter and her tower catches fire, which can be witnessed from outside.
• Shion arrives at the Sexy Garden place and gets shown inside.
• Aki logs on and wears her bunny ears (that are part of her outfit) to match with the bunny girl theme at Sexy Garden.
• Subaru brings the members over to hang around by the pool. As Subaru explains what they'll do, a Huey Pekora has been fighting fires at the group and everyone rushes back inside in a panic.
• Biboo apparently won a voice line gacha. She and Anya take a listen to it. The voice line Biboo got sounds to be from Kanade. Anya also got a voice line gacha too. The one Anya got is from Sora. Anya says that she got an SSR one. Anya says she got two from Sora, so she listens to the second one, which sounds slightly different but also it's a good one. Anya says she got 2 SSR's, and Biboo said she just got Kanade. Biboo gets a second voice line gacha and plays it. This one sounds to be from Aki. Biboo is satisfied with this voice line and she'll keep it.
• Shion and Subaru were in a room together, which lots of members watching over.
• The next egg event occurs. Biboo does her best to not be too loud (some of the members are nearby chatting) as she collect eggs since she's close by to the others. Kanade comes by and Kanade and Biboo start yelling trying to collect all the eggs in the area. Matsuri and Biboo both tie with 111 eggs, which Biboo expressed her frustration in.
• Anya and Biboo tell Sora that they got her voice lines and they liked them. They're thankful for Sora's voice lines. Anya and Biboo take a look at all the photos that Shion and Choco took. Anya sees the art from Raora and wants to get a commission. Biboo says that the art will cost 1000 scraps but that might be too much for Anya. Biboo offers a discount of 500 scrap for the art, which Anya accepts. Anya asks if Raora can draw on the board that Anya put in her house. Biboo says she'll contact Raora about it.
• While Biboo and Anya are chatting, Su, Sora, and Chihaya come by. They want to hear Sora's voice line but Anya has it, which is why they went to them. Anya lets the girls listen to Sora's voice lines. Anya says that they have to give her scraps for listening to the voice line, which Su proceeds to do. Biboo asks Anya to make them listen to the Aki voice tape. Anya tells Biboo to make them pay for it. Anya, Biboo, Su, Sora, and Chihaya then head over to the gambling area for the roulette wheel.
• Shion played a voice line of Subaru on a boombox and came up to Subaru. Subaru decides to stab Shion and a chase ensues.
• Kanade and Botan are spending time in the lovey-dovey room as Subaru, Miko, and Aki watch.
• Mio partakes in some peaceful fishing nearby her house.
• Koyori and Lamy have been hanging out together. They both got some voice lines from Sexy Garden that they're trying to listen to. Lamy got Botan's voice pack.
• Subaru and Aki seem to be the next ones up in the lovey-dovey room. Miko, Koyori, and Lamy watch the two of them.
• After gambling for a while, Anya and Biboo head over to the Sexy Garden area, as it's their turn. Sora, Chihaya, and Su continue to gamble. The next egg hunt occurs at this time. During the egg hunt, Biboo gets shot at by a Huey, but she wins with 96 eggs.
• Subaru and Miko did some ASMR for Koyori and Lamy (in part from the mini wheel that was spun).
• Its now Anyas turn. There's different rooms they can go into for Sexy Garden. Anya heads into one of the rooms with Miko and Subaru. They wait for Biboo to head on over, who went to an underground tunnel to record a voice line, but Biboo is waiting for a Huey to pass, since it's outside nearby attacking Pekora's tower with her in it Pekora. Biboo attempts to get out and head over but the Huey gets her and Biboo dies.
• Vivi and AZKi put up a picture of Vivi and Shion with Vivi's drawing inside Vivi's house. AZKi then heads outside to watch the helicopter and Pekora face off.
• When Biboo died, she respawned in the camper. Suddenly Calli shows up in the camper van too. She's here to tell Biboo off because she gambled their savings. Biboo says they only lost 300 scrap. Biboo is running back to her items as Calli follows along. Calli questions why Biboo bet everything on red. Biboo tells Calli thats its almost her turn at the Sexy Garden area but Calli doesn't understand.
• Biboo finally arrives at the Bunny Garden area with Calli joining along. Biboo and Anya take their turn in a police interrogation experience. Subaru and Miko give them masks to wear that blind them and are tied to chairs. Calli realizing what's happening runs away from this. Subaru, Koyori, Choco, and Shion watch from the outside. Aki flerts to Anya while Choco takes pictures. While the flirting goes on, Calli can be seen around. She did meet up with Shion and Choco for a quick second and Choco got a picture. After Anya got flirted, i'ts now Biboo's turn. Subaru and Aki talk to Biboo, while Choco takes more pictures. Suddenly Subaru waterboards them by accident. They then unblind Biboo and free her, and Biboo drops her "kintama". Once that's over, Biboo and Anya get their picture taken with Subaru and Aki. Miko thanks them for their time. They're also given photos of their time here.
• Pekora, Vivi, and AZKi take down Bradley together. There were some deaths but it is an overall success, though AZKi asked Vivi for 1000 scraps as compensation. Vivi realized that Pekora may have tricked Vivi into shooting AZKi and this is why scraps were given.
• After that event, Biboo and Anya try to see if Calli is still online. Biboo restarts her game in the meantime. While waiting, Biboo expresses how she wants to do big events like this but with the EN girls. Biboo logs back online and meets with Anya.
• Su and Chihaya are the next ones up for Subaru and Miko's lovey-dovey time. The two of them enter one of the rooms with the heart and roulette wheel. They spin the little wheel which will tell them what they'll have to do.
• Sora and Aki travel together. Aki takes Sora over to her house and shows her around. Aki then takes Sora over to what I think is the dome area. While Aki and Sora explore the dome area, Sora falls from the dome and dies. She heads back trying to find her stuff.
• Biboo and Anya record a voice pack together as a gift for Subaru. On their way to deliver the gift, they see that Kanade is trying to call for an airdrop using purple smoke. Su and Chihaya are also there to watch. Biboo plays Kanade's voice pack in front of the group. Then Biboo plays her own voice line front of the group, which everyone remarks on how cute it is. Soon the airdrop lands and the items are collected. Anya teases Kanade with the voice line that Kanade had previously made. Kanade then runs away, and the group follow her. They head over to Kanade and Vivi's house. The group then proceed to bully Kanade for her house design.
• Choco gets a chance to read her letter from Shion inside their house. Choco gets emotional reading it, feeling like she's about to cry. Shion teases her about it. The two also take pictures of each other. Then Shion and Choco make a shared drawing together. The two draw each other.
• Matsuri asked to get the Sexy Garden experience from Miko and Subaru, so the two proceed to do so. Matsuri gets the police interrogation experience. After the experience, Matsuri gets her picture taken. Matusri then proceeds to make a drawing. Matsuri makes a drawing of Miko.
• Biboo is able to give Subaru her present. Anya asks to Subaru where Aki is at themoment. While they are chatting the egg hunt triggers and they begin the egg hunt. Biboo seems to have misplaced her egg basket, but gets a new one. The girls all scatter to find eggs. Anya wins the egg hunt with 95 eggs.
• Miko and Biboo nearby give their congratulations to Anya. Biboo meets up with Subaru again and Subaru listens to Biboo's voicepack. Miko also listens along too. Miko gives a loud response to which Subaru tells her to shut up. After Subaru and Miko praise Biboo for her voice pack and call her a genius. Biboo uses the same trick that Subaru did, saying if they were satisfied to give her money. Subaru gives her some scraps and Biboo thanks her for them. Subaru tells Biboo to get money from Miko too. Anya, who was listening, also pressures Subaru to give money. Subaru gives Anya some money and Miko returns giving money to Miko. Biboo thanks them for the scraps.
• Miko sees the finished drawing that Matsuri made of Miko. Everyone gets a laugh out of it.
• Subaru tells the girls that Sexy Garden is now closed for the day. Anya wonders if they'll be open again tomorrow. Biboo and Anya head on back home. Miko and Subaru talk about today, and see that Marine is sleeping inside their house. Miko takes a picture of her.
• Pekora spends some time gambling at the roulette wheel.
• Kanade and Chihaya spend some time together at the gambling house.
• Subaru takes a visit to Choco and Shion's house. Subaru will also make a drawing. Subaru makes a drawing of of Shion. Choco is also drawing Shion, and Shion is drawing Subaru. Theres a lot of bonding over the three as they spend the late night hours together.

These entertainers, who use digital avatars, are growing in popularity

Here you go. There's basically nothing to it, besides the revelation that there's apparently a research firm by the name "Mordor Intelligence" that is tracking the vtuber industry. Who names their fucking company that?

A GLOWING CUBE sits in the centre of Makuhari Messe, one of Japan’s largest convention centres. As the crowd roars with excitement, Hoshimachi Suisei (pictured) emerges from the box wearing a short, frilly skirt and her signature blue hair artfully tied up. She kicks off the show with her hit song “Stellar Stellar” before dozens of other performers take turns singing, dancing and bantering with the audience. The thousands of fans in attendance could not care less that Ms Hoshimachi and her cohort are digital avatars.

These entertainers are known as “VTubers”—“virtual YouTubers”—and they do not show their real faces; instead, individuals often use motion-capture technology to superimpose their movements onto their cartoon avatars in real time. Though the biggest VTubers host concerts and events, most remain in the digital realm, livestreaming footage of themselves singing, chatting or playing video games.

The phenomenon started in Japan around a decade ago as a niche curiosity, but it has now spread across the world. It took off during the coronavirus pandemic, as people, particularly youngsters, went in search of entertainment and companionship online. According to Mordor Intelligence, a research firm, the global VTuber industry is worth an estimated $2.9bn and could reach $4.5bn by 2030.

Japanese VTubers dominate, but other countries are getting in on the act. VTuber talent agencies such as Hololive Production have opened outposts in the West to target English-speaking audiences, with great success. Gawr Gura, an American whose avatar wears a shark costume, has 4.6m subscribers on YouTube: the most of any VTuber. (Her recent announcement that she would be retiring on May 1st has provoked much dismay.)

The rise of VTubers represents a mix of two Japanese cultural exports. One is anime, the country’s homegrown style of animation, which has soared in popularity across the world in recent decades. (International streaming revenues are expected to exceed $12bn by 2030, up from $3.7bn in 2023.) VTubers usually have the wide eyes and cutesy aesthetic typical of anime shows; they are like beloved cartoon characters that can talk back from the screen.

The other is Japan’s idol culture, in which fans develop intense emotional bonds with public figures. To deepen those bonds, idols often make themselves accessible to their fans at meet-and-greet events. VTubers have adapted this model to the digital realm by using lucrative “Super Chats”. During a livestream, fans can send a message with a tip, in the hope that the VTuber will respond. Minato Aqua, a Japanese VTuber who wears a sailor uniform, is estimated to have made more than $500,000 from Super Chats in 2024.

Some 70% of VTubers are female; the majority of their fans are male. The use of alternative personas allows VTubers to be themselves at the same time as it prevents admirers from getting too close. Patrick Galbraith of Senshu University in Tokyo notes that VTubers’ appeal lies in their “freewheeling” communication style: they may suddenly burst into song or shout random statements. Devoted fans, called “clippers”, turn these moments into short, shareable videos and add subtitles. Some clips get millions of views on platforms such as TikTok. Talent agencies, for their part, welcome clipping as free marketing.

Given that AI models can write songs, generate artwork and have realistic conversations, might VTubers be replaced by AITubers? Neuro-sama, an AI VTuber who sports brown hair and bows, has a large following on Twitch, a livestreaming site; she plays video games and responds to fans with the help of AI models. By offering round-the-clock amusement, AITubers can give more of what fans crave.

Yet the industry is sanguine about ai. Motoaki Tanigo, the boss of Cover Corporation, which owns Hololive Production, has said that “Fans are drawn to VTubers because they know there is a real person behind the screen, someone they can connect with, empathise with and support.” Studies show that attractive avatars lure viewers, but what keeps them watching is the naka no hito: the person inside. ■
