There are people whose mental issues are caused by the physical condition of their brain, often having to do with an imbalance of neurotransmitters. Those people medication can be a useful bridge for, to allow them to reach a mental space where they can successfully re-orient their perspective and priorities; just relying on medication would be insufficient, but it can absolutely be a part of the solution. And some people need to talk through their issues. But there's a lot of snake oil being peddled in both modalities.

Therapy is useful for people that have a built up emotional response to stimulus without a framework to process the information. If the therapist is good (and skill truly matters in that field), they can help a person unwind their mental hang-ups. It's far more useful for things like actual Phobias: outside fight or flight responses to stimulus.
It's about 30% "talk good", 40% "talk is whatever" and 30% "talk is actively negative". This is why Crisis Counseling was a huge thing for a minute, then basically fell off a cliff. You can easily harm more people than you helped.
