FF8 is just straight up bad though. Art design and music are still really good, but the plot is just.... not great.

I kind of like what FFVIII tried with the game systems even if ultimately it ended up broken almost as much as FFII's system (and people like Spoony misrepresenting it or "expert" recommendations to play it in a non-standard way - i.e. by keeping the level deliberately low to avoid boss and enemy scaling up - don't help either). The setting was good, but its story and how it was focused was garbage (still entertaining though).

Flayon was able to match people who went to his M&Gs to chatters just from hearing how they talked before they revealed their usernames. I can buy him spreadsheeting everyone who shows up in his chat or twitter.

FFII's system was fun though. Sure, it was abusable, but it also let you get the character you wanted by repeatedly using the character that way. You want to be a fire casting mage, well, just keep on casting fire magic and you get better at casting, fire spells and using magic. You want a character that hits people with a sword, just hit them with a sword and you got better at using swords and attacking. Actually one of the better levelling systems in FF, even taking how abusable it was into account.

FFVIII, on the other hand, gave you nice stuff for spells but then decided you should be crippled if you ever actually used your spell material on anything. Can't use that spell material on actually casting spells, otherwise you're permanently debuffed until you get more of that material. It's like you're always seeing the "No Fun Allowed" sign whenever you play. One of the worst levelling systems in FF.

I was hoping that by now, most folks would have come to the conclusion that leveling up in FFVIII is a mistake. Just show up to battle with 1 hp and smash those limit break prompts.

The idea of not leveling or grinding for stuff in JRPGs was a good one. I believe had they executed it better we would be playing a different swathe of remakes.
It's a shame the story was terrible.
