If you look into the "popular anime discourse", say MHA or JJK, you'd see mostly people being weird and virtue signal over fictional characters about body shape, age of consent and "realistic skin tone".
If you go back to early 2010 Twitter or even further into forums talking about popular anime, you'd find people fighting wars to convince others his waifu is hotter, anime girls in war uniforms, hating and envying Yuuki Rito and making fun of the customary japanese way to wash warcrimes in media.

All time classic that was also discussed in the open without moralism because people weren't engaged in stupid cultural wars (at least not on purpose), most would scoff and move on with their lives.

The most interesting explanation I've seen is that 1) They're most likely our drones, and 2) they're searching for something using sensors and in a way they can't be up front with the general public. The conspiracy side thinks it's a suitcase nuke - as horrifying as that thought is.

The problem is that Soviet accounting wasn't exactly good. So it's less there's 80 missing nukes and more there might be some missing nukes and a lot of fake ones that didn't exist.

Ah, Guilty Crown. A show that went so off the rails I got back online to complain about it. And, yes, they had an idea and so messed it up that the MC took a Hard Hitler Turn almost out of nowhere and they just brushed it off a couple of episodes later. I very vividly remember going "they can't be seriously going down that path?" at the end of one episode and the next one they have force labor of the Low Scores. It's WILD. The show is also terrible, yet extremely high budget and spawned an entire genre of AniSongs. (EGOIST was put together for the production. Redjuice did the visual design. That's IrYS's character designer.)

But the show did give us one of the greatest anime side characters of all time. Dan Eagleman. When you put an American caricature in a series and accidently introduce a character that's competent & ruins most of the tension in the process.
