I really cannot stand empty pandering regardless of the cause, but the Christian stuff seems especially egregious because the forgiving nature of Christianity makes Christians very easy to grift. It's been a thing for generations, from street preachers to televangelists, and this performative online shit is just the latest form of it.
Now let me be clear here: I am not a religious man, I have no connection with God; but in recent years I have come to strongly believe there is a place for Christianity in society. We live in a very judgemental world now, with modern cancel culture holding past sins over everyone's heads in a way that isn't healthy. It's no wonder so many people have crippling insecurity when mistakes from their early adulthood continue to define them even years down the line; it inhibits their ability to move on, since their reputation crab-buckets them. If asking God for forgiveness is the route somebody needs to take to walk away from their sins with a clear conscience and become a better person in the future, I can respect that.
The problem is, it is very easy for people who are not earnestly trying to live more honest lives to recite buzzwords and slogans to win validation from both other grifters, and genuine well-meaning Christians. That's what the "Christ is king!" shit feels like, because self-improvement is a very personal journey; not something you effortlessly throw out there for retweets.
Similar to how troll's remorse is a thing for people who used to make edgy jokes on Something Awful but know they'd never get away with it nowadays, degenerate's remorse is a thing for people who slept around or indulged in adult material more than they care to admit back in the day.
