It's worth noting that twitch also has a system to push people based off where you live. They also only reccomend streamers in your language only (the streamer can set this or it's auto set). So people that speak Spanish who are bilingual are less likely to find someone else who is bilingual, and has their stream set to "English" and not Spanish. I watch a lot of Korean vtubers on twitch, and you specifically have to look up their language tag to find them.
In general, YouTube's algorithm's purpose is more about keeping the user on-site for as long as possible rather than generating immediate revenue, and since more and more people use smartphones these days, that involves spoonfeeding them content that's specifically designed for the device in front of them. Passively-consumed content like podcasts, Let's Plays and livestream vods have traditionally done well from the algorithm pushing watch time to keep users on site while Shorts have that more-ish effect (particularly on kids) since viewers will just watch one after the other on their phones; vertical livestreams are essentially the best of both worlds for this since they're formatted for the most popular devices and have longer run times to keep people around.
I think that one demographics chart of popular things in Japan was hugely telling, and can be extrapolated to the western audiences too. TLDR was that Holo fans are mostly 30-something males (people who are sick of all the woke nonsense), and niji fans are mostly 20-something females (people who are all of the woke nonsense).
