They were probably mad that Palantir was taken by a big data/analytics corporation
Peter Thiel's behind that one, same with Anduril Industries via one of his VC fund lackeys, together with the Oculus Rift guy. Silicon Valley techbros being cringe retards and missing the point of the works of art they consoom, I swear... I'm glad Tolkien isn't alive to see them trying to appropriate LOTR in the name of mass surveillance and the Military-Industrial Complex. They're literally RPing as fucking Saruman...

Here you go. There's basically nothing to it, besides the revelation that there's apparently a research firm by the name "Mordor Intelligence" that is tracking the vtuber industry. Who names their fucking company that?

A GLOWING CUBE sits in the centre of Makuhari Messe, one of Japan’s largest convention centres. As the crowd roars with excitement, Hoshimachi Suisei (pictured) emerges from the box wearing a short, frilly skirt and her signature blue hair artfully tied up. She kicks off the show with her hit song “Stellar Stellar” before dozens of other performers take turns singing, dancing and bantering with the audience. The thousands of fans in attendance could not care less that Ms Hoshimachi and her cohort are digital avatars.

These entertainers are known as “VTubers”—“virtual YouTubers”—and they do not show their real faces; instead, individuals often use motion-capture technology to superimpose their movements onto their cartoon avatars in real time. Though the biggest VTubers host concerts and events, most remain in the digital realm, livestreaming footage of themselves singing, chatting or playing video games.

The phenomenon started in Japan around a decade ago as a niche curiosity, but it has now spread across the world. It took off during the coronavirus pandemic, as people, particularly youngsters, went in search of entertainment and companionship online. According to Mordor Intelligence, a research firm, the global VTuber industry is worth an estimated $2.9bn and could reach $4.5bn by 2030.

Japanese VTubers dominate, but other countries are getting in on the act. VTuber talent agencies such as Hololive Production have opened outposts in the West to target English-speaking audiences, with great success. Gawr Gura, an American whose avatar wears a shark costume, has 4.6m subscribers on YouTube: the most of any VTuber. (Her recent announcement that she would be retiring on May 1st has provoked much dismay.)

The rise of VTubers represents a mix of two Japanese cultural exports. One is anime, the country’s homegrown style of animation, which has soared in popularity across the world in recent decades. (International streaming revenues are expected to exceed $12bn by 2030, up from $3.7bn in 2023.) VTubers usually have the wide eyes and cutesy aesthetic typical of anime shows; they are like beloved cartoon characters that can talk back from the screen.

The other is Japan’s idol culture, in which fans develop intense emotional bonds with public figures. To deepen those bonds, idols often make themselves accessible to their fans at meet-and-greet events. VTubers have adapted this model to the digital realm by using lucrative “Super Chats”. During a livestream, fans can send a message with a tip, in the hope that the VTuber will respond. Minato Aqua, a Japanese VTuber who wears a sailor uniform, is estimated to have made more than $500,000 from Super Chats in 2024.

Some 70% of VTubers are female; the majority of their fans are male. The use of alternative personas allows VTubers to be themselves at the same time as it prevents admirers from getting too close. Patrick Galbraith of Senshu University in Tokyo notes that VTubers’ appeal lies in their “freewheeling” communication style: they may suddenly burst into song or shout random statements. Devoted fans, called “clippers”, turn these moments into short, shareable videos and add subtitles. Some clips get millions of views on platforms such as TikTok. Talent agencies, for their part, welcome clipping as free marketing.

Given that AI models can write songs, generate artwork and have realistic conversations, might VTubers be replaced by AITubers? Neuro-sama, an AI VTuber who sports brown hair and bows, has a large following on Twitch, a livestreaming site; she plays video games and responds to fans with the help of AI models. By offering round-the-clock amusement, AITubers can give more of what fans crave.

Yet the industry is sanguine about ai. Motoaki Tanigo, the boss of Cover Corporation, which owns Hololive Production, has said that “Fans are drawn to VTubers because they know there is a real person behind the screen, someone they can connect with, empathise with and support.” Studies show that attractive avatars lure viewers, but what keeps them watching is the naka no hito: the person inside. ■

Mumei said her health issue was not THE reason for her to graduate. She said there were two reason but she can't talk about the other reason. She also mentioned that her health issue is not as bad as people had assumed.

It's raining.

Edit: And there's a 3d repeat coming soon too.

Terrible day for rain.

Also, "A New Start" ended up being a weirdly perfect graduation song. I hope Mooms can finally solve her medical issues so she can enjoy singing for the rest of her life.

Shion's graduation is tomorrow, so here's a bunch of translated clips with her that I've accumulated.
Shion takes suggestions from chat on what questions she should ask.

Matsuri confesses to Shion.

Shion seeks advice with Polka and Koyori on what to do.

Shion wants to take Koyori's brain, which caught interest from AZKi.

Pekora's call-in.

Miko and Subaru call in and flex their Hunter Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds, only for Shion to upstage both of them.

Shion wanted to do unlimited signatures for her graduation merch, but with how Aqua still has a backlog to this day, management didn't allow that. So Shion just set the "limited edition" to a very high number. Also the call-in from Ollie.

At the time of writing, the "limited edition" with the signature is still available.

Polka asks Shion if Aqua is really an introvert.

Shion talks to Choco and Lui about how Choco has long dropped the honorfics of her genmates.

Korone translates an English message to Shion.

Shion and Korone talk about their time in hololive and the changes it underwent.

Shion and Okayu look back at their early DM conversations and pre-2020 hololive.

Shion's last original song titled... Shion.

One weird side about graduations is it finally gets everyone to do something together. And Shion streaming consistently. It's sad to see her go, but it also makes sense.

And that factoid about Aqua STILL doing signatures 6 months laters is wild. But it's also the Onions that touched the Heavens, so I get it.

I've been checking out the VOD's for my recap of PVE Day 6 holoRust and uh...

what the fuck nene

We joke about it, but I think Nene is the only Holomem that's probably clearly autistic. Sometimes, it just comes out.

Palantir is kind of aptly named for what they're doing and the fact that direction information is a severe risk.

As for Anduril, also a solid name, frankly. Palmer is an interesting cat. After he made his money with Oculus, he got to see inside the real systems, then took his time and found a spot where things actually need improvement. Anduril's main priority is weapon designs with specific requirement of being able to move from Peace Time to War Time production at basically the drop of a hat. Which, if you've ever seen a Perun video, you'll understand why that design approach at the beginning really matters.

"Don't Be Evil". Because it's not 1999 anymore and edgy just isn't funny in the same way.

Mumei clarifying in this last member's stream that even though health issues were a part of the reason that she's graduating, the "stuff she can't talk about" (disagreements with management etc) were also a reason, and she's worried that people are overestimating those health issues and treating them as the only reason she's graduating.

She also said that this same issue is the reason she chose not to take Affiliate status, because it wouldn't feel right.

She mentioned what her last streams will be:

- Talk, call-in stream
- Short, pre-recorded 3d concert type thing (sounds like 30-ish minutes, 7-8 songs) produced pretty much entirely by Kanauru - not from the japan studio.

She said that although the graduation was planned for quite a while, the actual date came very last-minute. Since then she's been pretty much head-down working on stuff for it. Might account for the unexpected overlap between her and Gura's graduation dates - who knows what decision making goes into scheduling this stuff from the management side.

Some member vids will be made public, while others (including this stream) she will be removing. Archive shit while you still can!

Her 1-million wish was for another 3D outfit - something with long hair down that would be good for performing. Management kept extending the completion date until it ended up not mattering because she was graduating. She asked about an alternative when it became clear that it wasn't going to work out, but got told no.

She doesn't have her Gold play button - she was too scared that somebody coming into the house would see it, so she let management keep it.

She talked about the isolating effect that working for Hololive can have for someone who doesn't have friends or family nearby, and doesn't live in Japan. "Imagine trying to meet new people when you basically can't talk about the biggest aspect of your life." Says she feels like she hasn't been able to recover the progress she was making on her social anxiety that covid pretty much ended. She wants to focus on "getting back into society" after graduation.

Post-grad plans include lots of travel to visit family, spending more time outside, and future trips to japan to visit her hololive friends.

"Civilization duties" are going well.

Her career plans do not include an office job - what she's aiming for is something that will have her "out and about". She's very grateful that her time in Hololive has put her in a position (financially, presumably) to do volunteer work for a while. I'd bet on something like marine-biology fieldwork, myself.

Interesting. And rather unpleasant to hear.
I wonder, what those (supposed) disagreements mean and could those be the reason of the recent wave of graduations, rather than a simple coincidence.

Also, its nice to hear her health is much better.

I do wonder if some of the management disagreements had something to do with how maybe she wanted to combat her social anxiety in some way or form with the help of cover but for some reason or another it crossed too many red tape.

For some reason, the most obvious source of a disagreement with management never seems to come up when people speculate about this. Shouldn't money be the #1 rrat?

My explanations are always:
1. Money
2. Project shut downs
3. Workload
4. and most likely, all previous answers

She seems like her reasoning is much more about her personal life and lifestyle though. All that stuff about being isolated is not something that can really be solved, being in Holo is being (outwardly) anonymous, take it or leave it.

Management probably wanted to get all of the unsolvable graduations out of the way in order to reduce uncertainty, you can't really plan for shit if the people who are supposed to appear in it keep leaving.

I'd say it's almost certainly not money related:

Edit: I'm feeling less hopeful about her being an online content creator now sadly. She's going to go outside and make friends and have a job, she'll become a normie...
Also, the 'bleh' she does in the Hologra was not scripted. She just made the noise at herself after she recorded a take that she didn't like, but didn't edit it out before sending in the files, so they just added that scene without her knowing.

If she wanted money she should have taken the affiliate route. I can only assume that it means a lower revenue sharing rate but Ame/Chloe are new characters doing whatever they want within NDA reason. Unless someone pulls an Orc/Lando, we will most likely never know.

In what way? It's not like she is worrying about stalkers like JP talent. Plenty of families and friends know who Holos are, Chaama had a university friend collab, Lap had a roommate that knew, Milky and Calli were already friends. It sounds like self-isolation because of social anxiety which is fine.

I guess that could be it.

That's interesting. Even Gura who probably has the biggest opsec had no issues accepting the play button.
