That's true. Both times I had my guess on who was gonna be infected in the movie (Windows during the blood test scene and Gary after Palmer turned right next to him) I was dead wrong, so it's definitely smarter than me

It's heavily implied the reason why there was still a Thing active after the kennel incident was because either:
a) a part of the kennel-thing climbed out through the ceiling and escaped
b) the kennel-thing was fully destroyed but it did assimilate someone in their room alone prior to the kennel (which was likely Norris)
The Thing just got finished running rampant in the Norwegian outpost, so it knows to be cautious and not to do the obvious kills early on because if a Thing is discovered, they would easily make the logical jumps to determine who was the obvious kills. It's why despite destroying the Norwegian outpost, it was already discovered by the last two survivors and had to run. It was far more cautious this time.
