I think it depends on what happened, as you could serve things like suspensions and detention during lunch, but if you did something worse you served it afterhours.
Back in my day you'd be stuck in one room the entire day, start to finish, doing worksheet packets for your classes. Even if you managed to finish everything early you'd still be stuck in there until the bell at the end of the day. It was awful, boring, but effective.
