To those thinking that audio was really bad, I must inform you that in the late 90s we were just starting to use voice communication programs - like Roger Wilco - when playing multiplayer games, and later Half-Life (and thus Counter-Strike) would get in-game voice chat.
This was when most people were using 56k dial-up modems. And you had multiple voices coming through.
We could still understand each other. You don't know bad audio.
