Fencing use to be a problem that prevented people from randomly stealing everything that wasn't nailed down because it was difficult for a fencer to move sell all sorts of shit. It's why pawn shops were so big in the sketchy neighborhoods as they were often acting as a fencing operation but there's a limit to what they could sell and how quickly they could move the product. Pawn shops also require licensing and have to take down a lot of information for that reason. I remember there was a story of a professional cat burglar who was known for stealing tech equipment out of warehouses by cutting holes in the roof and having all kinds of specialized equipment. The reason he got caught was he stole a ton of specialized high end modems and the fences were offering him dirt pay as they had no idea what they were. He tried to sell them himself and got busted.
