Same reason people get upset with the idea of an addiction for gaming or an addiction for weed or an addiction for the internet or anything. It's multifaceted and I don't think I could do a good job talking about it, but you have people who have a problem and
- don't/can't want to admit it/fight it
- have built their personality around it and may find it hard to change
- have built their social groups around it and are constantly being reaffirmed (you're not addicted, they're just prudes, boomers, etc.)
- feel insulted because of the negative stigma (being an addict is a serious problem and not necessarily an insult)
- too many to list
Then you have people who aren't addicted but maybe skirt the line or self consciously believe they spend a bit too much time doing whatever and are judging themselves too harshly and can have the same negative reactions. Looking inward to deal with negative aspects of yourself, perceived or otherwise is just not something most people are willing to accept without help and the internet, same place where porn addiction grows, is very circular for these types of things. Addicts reaffirming addicts. Porn specifically is also a bit of a touchy subject because in real life talking about it is a bit taboo. It may be a bit embarrassing to admit you spent all night gaming or drinking, but it's not social death. Saying you spent all night jerking it to creampies in the same tone is going to get you some stares and some distance when what you really need is help.
I could go on about the dangers of not being moderate and addictions evolving, not just for porn (though I personally think it's becoming more dangerous than before) but in general, but I think you get my point. Oh another thing I want to mention though is while the irl world sees horny as taboo in a lot of ways, it's way freer online. You can talk about gooning to anime titties just fine and when you start advancing in porn titles so to speak there will always be a community for you to escape to when you've become to hardcore for your former gooncrew. Those gooncave guys have most certainly set up their own site or discord or something where they can echo chamber their interests to self destruction because no one is going to tell them they need help.
