The sad reality is that with consolidation of the Internet we're not going to see breakouts like we did back in the day. I remember reading tons of webcomics like Zebra Girl, but with people no longer sharing websites they stumble upon and only going to main stream sites it's becoming less and less likely anything new or exciting bubbles to the top.

Modern Internet is quite very shit.
