There was also far more rapid advancement between SMW and Halo 3 than Halo 3 and today.
The worst thing about the past twenty years is how much nothing there's been in terms of creative or technological progress. A lot of filler, with some few interesting spots (like VR, drone tech, and AI). Creatively, it's been bankrupt. When the most "creative" development in gaming was Walking Simulators, that's a sign that a lot of people should kill themselves.
