What is more of a shame is how much Phoenix grew up in the game, just to take almost all that character development back for the sequels. I get that the games have to be somewhat goofy, but mature dad Phoenix was great.

reminds me of Persona 5,
The first arc with Komoshida was peak storytelling story telling and the one time the game stuck to it's themes, unfortunately the rest of the game fall flat on it's face.

Not sure if I'm off base, but it feels like after the 2D and the ones set in the past, they got new writers for the 3DS ones and they are not very good. Because the worsening in writing quality across the board for those last 2 is quite apparent.

Shu Takumi, the series creator, stopped working on the mainline games after 4. He didn't direct 4, like he did 1-3, but still did scenario and supervisor work on it. So that may be why.

To be fair, he did direct and create the Great AA games, though, which I didn't find to be as good as 1-4, either.
