I once had a conversation with a European (French speaker not sure if Swiss, French or Belgian) exchange student and the topic of gypsies came up. This exchange student was a stereotypical university-educated liberal type, went to pride rallies, interned with Amnesty International, that kind of thing.
He described them as lowest of the low and said that the hate is largely justified. Even pulled the whole "Racism is wrong BUT..." when talking about how they were the subject of discrimination in the past. I've never had the displeasure of interacting with a gypsy in the times I've been to Europe, but it must be real bad if this otherwise "woke" European would even think of them in this way.
