The money disappeared and no one ever asked any questions.

It's also an issue of oligopolies. They purposely give subpar service to cut corners. When google fiber opened up their service in a few select cities, all the ISPs in those towns MAGICALLY increased their internet speeds and service quality. The big companies also lobby local governments for regulations to keep others from starting up and competing with them. They've purposely increased the cost of entry to prevent new competition.

It feels like US internet reliability has dropped a lot over the last several years. Over the past few months, mine has started dropping out randomly at any time of day, instead of usually doing so in the middle of the day (which I don't think it did at all until we were a while into The Plague Years), and a bunch of chuubas seem to have more problems now than they did over the past several years.

I'd guess there's been tons of deferred maintenance can-kicking.
