It's far more once the Cons start to get big, that's the type of crowd they always get. And it's always a specific subculture. This is true of Renfaires, of all things. It's an extension of the Concert/Festival/Groupie thing. Big Foot became a thing in the USA, popularly, because of the early furry conventions. A reality I never wanted to learn and, screw you Bob!, you didn't have to tell me about it.
Something good to keep in mind is this point about Japan. For roughly 80% of the population, they're some combination of prudish, depressed and/or overworked that the government is literally running programs to get them to have sex. But for 20% of the population, they'll do the most f'd up, degenerate stuff for very cheap. Japan has one of the harshest divides between the Functional and Degenerate sides, but it exists everywhere.
