When I make a controversial point, and I know I am, I often try to make it as convincing and agreeable as possible so that people don't just outright screech at me (lawyer instincts unless I am actually angry at someone and just wanna argue), but I feel like bossman often makes his points in the most "I am right and there's nothing more to say" way, which pisses off our gaggle of anti-authority contrarians better than pretty much anything you could come up with.

The logical conclusion of this is a "choose the best interpretation" kind of deal: He either doesn't realize how he comes of, or he's so conceited about always being right that he doesn't care how others see him.

I feel like there's been a handful of occasions where I've said basically the same thing as Proctor and got a generally favourable response while he's been Migo'd into oblivion, and I feel like it's a writing style thing.

From an argumentative writing perspective my writing style is weak since I downplay my own authority out of caution, but that does mean people are generally more forgiving of minor mistakes or misunderstandings on my part if they can still appreciate the general sentiment of what I'm saying. Proctor has a conventionally strong argumentative writing tone that doesn't land as intended when the basis for the argument is a subjective interpretation (whether a certain event should be interpreted charitably or uncharitably) rather than a hard confirmed fact, or when his argument is based on information nobody outside of the mod team is privy to (which is the one that really sticks in people's craw).
