Been a big fan of the latest Twitter trend of people going
"Man anyone who thinks tariffs are <good/bad> really are idiots! They should study economics! Clearly tariffs are <bad/good>!"

You ask for the explanation, you get called an idiot, or get told to go study economics.
Show me an economist with only one hand.

Economics is a cult, not even a pseudoscience like psychology, or a true science like agriculture, or an artform like cheesemaking.

Marxist economics is, which isn't economics, but philosophy. Most modern Western economics stems from that, be it Keynesianism or Modern Monetary Theory.

Actual economics is an observational science. Like actual science, it recognizes that anything that comes out of it is just the best available model, open to being added to or supplanted.

Most the "economists" you hear today are usually Keynesians (or Post-Kenynesians) or are just people who took up the job and are saying whatever the people paying them want them to say. Not any different from any other "experts" you hear about in the media.

Remember, when an economist tells you to buy a stock that has been green awhile don't do it and when they tell you to sell when it has been red awhile also don't do that (but maybe buy more).

At the risk of sounding like a "gotcha redditor":

🧪 In a science, you observe something, and then watch what happens under a proposed hypothesis. If you speak of this hypothesis, out loud, it won't change the outcome in any way. You can shout out loud "raindrops taste like like IPA!" and it won't change the result.

:wawaspazzing: In economics, if you so much as make a comment or write about what you expect the market to do, based on your observations?
It can affect the outcome.

Yes, that is the difference between a hard science, like physics, and economics. Both have observational aspects as core to them, but you can test physics based on whatever understanding of universal laws is present at the time.

With economics - actual economics - the observation is not on universal laws, but on humanity and its interaction with itself. Room for error, as there's nothing concrete - and, I would argue, more importantly, an almost uncountable amount of variables - but you can still find a lot of patterns and formulas that have a good track record, and they can be applied very consistently when you take into account potentially unforeseen variables. If the prediction is accurate with all the variables you accounted for, then good job. If not, then find what variables you failed to account for, crosscheck them with other past observations, and see if you can figure out whether it fits a different prior formula, or if a new one must be considered.

That is what makes it a form of science and not something like philosophy.

Meanwhile, random retards in the pub will tell you the exact opposite, telling you how much cleverer they are than the bigshots on the market who panic sell when they should clearly BUYBUYBUY when it's low.

In reality, those bigshots are selling because they have outstanding debts they have to cover by date x, and they cannot afford waiting for a rebound, they need some liquidity right fucking now.

Teensy tiny stockholders like myself can hold out (have the banks handle the market with algorithms telling the investment funds what to buy or sell, actually). People who actually, seriously trade have different concerns than "Buy Low."

Sometimes you have to sell a red stock if it stagnated or if you need the money. What you almost never should do is buy green on a surge. What I am referring to is the trend of market websites upgrading or downgrading stocks depending on if a stock is green or red at the time. They simply will say one day that the stock is a buy if it hits green, then will downgrade to sell if the next day hits red. You will lose your ass if you follow buy recommendations like this. Selling red is sometimes unavoidable.

Imagine having to watch and clip Johnny Somali content as a full-time job, but if you do, there's a chance you could add extra years to Johnny Somali's prison sentence.

Johnny Somali's going to be a thousand years old before he gets out of jail at this rate.
