The most accurate depiction of a balrog is just a tall flaming dude/fire spirit, not a literal Christian demon. I love the jackson films but they have severely damaged popular understanding of the source material. They are an INTERPRETATION of the source, not the source itself.

Shinbou's works in general, and Monogatari in particular, draw heavily on theatrical conventions where you'll often have simple sets.

It somewhat reminds me of X-Men: First Class, where all the action scenes and whatnot sucked, and the film was at its best when it was just Professor X and Magneto talking to each other. Wish the whole film had been just that, but fat chance there.

You see, wings are a simile for a creature having wings.
You can't keep SCREECHING it's a simile like that has any weight when again THE SENTINCE RIGHT AFTER treats them as having physical presence.
I assumed you were just leaning into the bit m8 no one actually cares about the wings or at least i don't.

Are they eagles or are they clouds?
Now these:

This is something tolkien does, several times, and it's always meant to represent something as something else, it is SIMILE. Homeboy is just trying to be fancy with his descriptions.

Eh I like both because I like seeing the hobbits being hobbits and I also like watching araragi screw around with hachikuji in any opportune momentLord of the Rings (as movies) suck balls. Then you look at something with the same extent or maybe even longer, Monogatari, and it's a masterpiece adaptation across many iterations.

I agree, the production team itself was really into it but shortening them to movies didn't help the storytelling part. Maybe it's made for people who can't imagine the pages of descriptive content of the books, I dunno.
