Obivously to save money, I dialed up your local BBSes, so it was very possible to accidentally run into people who may literally live next to you. However, the default configuration and culture for a majority of these BBSes was for people to remain anonymous. Most BBSes didn't ask for your real name, birthdate, address, etc. At most they would ask what sex you were and that was about it. Inter-user chat was a novel feature that not all Bulletin Board Software had.

I learned through osmosis to never share my age, even when I was that young. I was just an alias/handle in a sea of aliases. The people ALMOST felt real, but not quite real.

Dialup Internet became a thing, where ISPs were competing with each other for your blazing "fast" 56kbps modem connection. Even then, the very nature of the Internet connection speed made interacting limited to mostly AIM, ICQ, etc. where text messages were sent using a GUI.

I don't know what the hell happened but I suspect broadband and wireless Internet tech being dumbed down and now accessible via smartphones made the Internet available for everyone. It was no longer a boy's club of nerds who were already stigmatized by the "cool kids" playing stuff together, the very same "cool kids" bullies we hated were now in the same spaces as us, and ever since then the Internet has gone to shit.
