I can recognize vocal fry and hear women do it as an affectation, but maybe I haven't heard enough men trying to sound like women to have noticed it as a tell for that. Like in this example it sounds like a young woman or girl trying to do a deeper voice and straining her chords and doing the fry, but i have had at least one person tell me it sounds like a guy:
