I don't have any sort of studies or science to back it up but I do believe that a deterrent to depression, especially for men is to feel like you've accomplished something. The "just learn X crafts skill/go hunting/other hobby" idea is kind of in line with that. If you learn to make a fuckin' small table or box or catch a fish you'll feel accomplished and the depressive feelings wane away. Kind of also plays into the second part with the "hard jobs". They know they're doing hard work/labor and they come home knowing they put a good day of work in. Office workers meanwhile, have a few days where they actually do work that gives them "accomplishment" or spend a week doing fuck-all. I'm dropping in my own conspiracy here but it is probably why most offices I've seen have started incorporating gyms for people at the office. If you're going to waste 8-9 hours of the day in an office, might as well do it on call/on site lifting and doing cardio instead of eating junk food at a cubicle.
I was just reminded about Yuka Takaoka and how she got out of prison last year. For those unaware of who she is, she is an ex-hostess that stabbed her boyfriend with a kitchen knife.
