Question about the donation thing, is it actually a benefit or is it just an offset of what the donation is? As in, you get $20 in donation so you write off $20 or is there some strange loophole where you can get more than that? This just sounds like a weird commie talking point where in reality the donations are treated as a write off as they're, you know, donated, not actual income.

If you hard require it to do your job/live then yes.
For another heavy substance abuse industry, Restaurant staff is pretty much guaranteed 90% on at least cigs to get through a shift, cooks are almost perpetually drunk/high.
Edit - favorite example is the shift where one of the cooks, having forgotten his pipe proceeded to carve a potato to smoke weed out of in his downtime on shift

Peanut butter Pippa, that is all. 
TBH, the overnight shift is better than working actual business hours with a bunch of customers around if you have to do retail. The kinds of people you meet are a lot more fun to be around and breaks/lunch are consistent. Only real downside is you have to live like a vampire.
The closest thing I can maybe think of is The Empty Man, which is about tulpas. It really seems like a movie written by /x/
