I literally have push YouTube notifications enabled and it isn't properly fucking notifying me. Like the videos (neither of them) literally are not in my notifications tab despite notifications being explicitly enabled. I fucking hate YouTube

what works for me (on windows) is installing the youtube web app (just for notifications). it integrates into the windows notifications better than just enabling them via browser. windows will pop up with live notifications minutes before they get pushed to my phone. not sure if there's a similar integration for linux though.

Jeettube has had issues with that for ages, that and the new recommended shit they shove in there to hide that it's not working is so fucking annoying, if I wanted notifications from channels I'd click the bell, fuck off.

So, fun fact.

YouTube not sending out notifications even though you've asked for them isn't a bug, it's a feature. They assume that if they keep sending out notifications you're not engaging with you'll eventually just turn notifications off entirely on your phone/tablet/whatever, meaning you'll visit the site less often overall. Their workaround for this is to algorithmically pick out the notifications it thinks you're most likely to click on and show those to you while supressing the ones it thinks you'll ignore.

Yes, this happens even if you specifically click the bell icon to say you want to be notified of everything a specific channel does. YouTube's machine clearly knows what you want better than you do.

It's a fucking black box. We do know their stated goal is viewer retention, which, I think, suggests that creators are not just rated on watch time, initial click %, or upload frequency, but also click through to other content. Yuni vids are extremely short, extremely infrequent, AND they aren't conducive to going and watching other content (similar or otherwise) for the average viewer.

This is tea leaf reading, but it's the going and watching other vids from the webpage of the yuni vid that I think hurts infrequent uploaders the most on bell notifs.
Even if viewers are dedicated why would it give you the notif over another video that is longer (more ads served) and has you linking into other, easier to categorize as similar content (to get served more ads)? It's hard to serve recommendations and ads on a yuni vid.

The thing is that I sort of get the logic, because notification management is a bit of a mess all around... but it was their dogshit communication a few years ago that made it as bad as it is in the first place.

When they first introduced that bell icon thing the idea was to create a distinction between things you want in your sub feed and things you want to be immediately notified about - but they did an absolutely dogshit job of communicating that so everyone just assumed it was a way to fix the previously-glitchy sub feed. Every YouTuber started telling their viewers to click the bell on every video because they assumed they'd need them to for the sub to "count", leading to users having far more notifications cued up than they'd ever actually want. When people eventually get sick of the popups and mute everything YouTube-related, it's YouTube themselves who started the chain of events leading to that, and now they're restarting their usual cycle of trying to fix one problem by creating a different problem.
