The railroad is probably half the reason she's Canadian in the first place.
In the years before British Columbia signed the articles of confederation, opinion was roughly split on whether to seek confederation into British North America (Canada) or annexation into the United States. Some form of transport west, which was originally going to be a wagon road but thanks to corruption ended up being a railway, was part of what BC asked for in order to sign up to Canada at all.
No railway and immigrants to the Vancouver area might end up being American instead.
