I feel like Jawol (Porcelain Maid) doing it since the start and explicitly setting up a babiniku vtuber with the possesed doll thing gave him a great out while Zen has been playing the female kayfaybe complete with ubercoomer proclivities that it would be harder for him to come out or make the model work

Maybe, maybe not. Problem with the LGBT audience is that they talk a big game but tend not to actually show up. They're a real loud minority.
For a kind of comparable thing, Nyanners survived her BF reveal with Aethel, but it was still a hell of a lot of turbulence that cost her a decent chunk of her audience she still hasn't really rebuilt. (Though going indie and into her own little corner afterwards certainly hasn't helped)
