The first minutes of Shin-sekai yori follow a deeply depressed middle-school child that suddenly gets psychic powers in the middle of Tokyo. So he does the most normal thing such menhera individual would do. Kill every living thing that enters his reach. What follows is the end of the world as more individuals gain such powers. Then we jump a thousand years in the future to a rural village in the middle of the mountains where civilization seemingly has regressed technologically. Shit just gets more horrifying and depressing from there.

Damn right! I absolutely hold Shinsekai Yori as one of the best animes when it comes to the story writing and I do plan to rewatch it sometime in the future. As for the ending song Wareta Ringo it’s also been covered by Shiki Miyoshino and Iku Hoshifuri around 2 years ago and it’s pretty good.

SSY's only major mistake was the hard gay turn in the second main act. You still have a male audience, don't put dudes kissing on screen. That aside, it was a series that stuck with me long enough I randomly reanalyzed it while doing some yard work several years later. The entire story is actually brutal critique of post-WW2 Japanese society and the stasis it has fallen into. Every primary point it's trying to highlight is about around how the society culls both the top & bottom and only those with incredible capacity to absorb having to perform quaint horrors move along calmly.

That sort of made sense from the perspective of the engineered society, though. They can't engineer the reproductive drive out of human beings completely, but they don't want unplanned pregnancies that could lead to unplanned people with the potential for "demonic" abilities, so they completely channel the adolescent sex drive into non-reproductive modes. It's another layer of horror to stack on the rest.
